Sarab
Sarab is a small town in Azerbaijan province. Like other rug producing cities and villages of this region, Sarab shows an influence of Caucasian patterns, always having simple geometric motifs. In these rugs, the color of the field is usually beige, with blue, rusty red, brown, and gold for the motifs. Hand-spun wool and natural dyes make Sarab rugs one of the most durable types of Persian rugs. Some old pieces of Sarab rugs can be quite valuable. Foundation is cotton in newer pieces and wool in older ones. Two shots of weft are inserted on top of each row of knots, and packed tightly. The usual size of Sarab rugs is up to about 5 by 8 feet, and many runners of different length are woven in this region. Average knot density is around 100-120 KPSI.
