Ardebil is located to the west of the volcanic mount of Sabalan. Due to its geographic proximity to the Russian border, most Ardebil rugs tend to look like Persian copies of Caucasian designs, and are in high demand. They are made of hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, with bold colors of red, ivory, soft green, and royal blue. Flower designs are rarely seen in Ardebil rugs; most of the patterns are of a geometric nature, usually representing interpretation of some animals such as peacocks, snakes, and roosters. They normally come in medium sizes up to 9 by 12 feet, and go well with contemporary, traditional, as well as modern decors. The pile is very well textured, with an average knot density of around 130 KPSI.
