To the north of Kerman, the Afshari tribe is settled around Sirjan, having moved from northwest, near Urmia lake long time ago due to political reasons. The designs used in Afshar rugs are the typical tribal patterns found in all Persian tribal rugs, with detailed geometric shapes, and more than one single medallion in the field. They usually use natural dyes, cotton foundation, and are made on flat (horizontal) looms. The size of this type of rug will normally not exceed 6 by 9 feet. Compared to similar Persian rugs, Afshars are in high demand, and therefore more expensive. The wool of Afshar rugs is usually hand-spun, with an average knot density of 130-140 KPSI.
