Kashan is located in the north of Isfahan province about 80 miles south of Qum. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Kashan had some of the most advanced workshops for production of rugs. Quality of wool is excellent in these rugs, imported from United Kingdom up to 1930, and then acquired from Sabzevar in northeast Persia. Kurk wool (from the neck of lambs) has been and still is being used. Kashan rugs have always been conservatively made, following the same patterns and color combinations. All sizes are possible in Kashan rugs. They have “Shah Abbasi” flowers in the field, with or without a medallion. Red, dark and light blue, ivory and green are the main colors. Rugs woven in Ardekan are similar to Kashans, of which we would normally expect a higher quality. Knot density for Kashan rugs ranges from 100 to over 400 KPSI.
