Pakistan Rugs
The art of rug weaving in Pakistan goes back to the sixteenth century. Any hand knotted rug from Pakistan belongs to the category of “Pakistani” or “Mouri”. Those from the Pakistani category copy Persian designs of Farahan, Kerman, and Tabriz, just to name a few, while pieces from Mouri category are reproductions of Turkeman pattern (called Bokhara), characterized by repeated and geometric diamond-shaped motifs. These rugs come in all possible sizes, but do not normally exceed 12 by 18 feet. Use of more muted color tones has made them very popular in Western markets. Rugs woven in Pakistan are produced exclusively for exportation. Almost all handmade rugs woven in this region are made in concentrated workshops and factories. The pile is usually trimmed very short, with two shots of cotton weft inserted over each single row of knots. The knot density ranges from 120 to 300 KPSI.
