Sanandaj (also named Senneh) is a Kurdish town of Kermanshah province, sharing a border with Azerbaijan from the north. Sanandaj rugs have an international reputation due to their durability and very decorative, often Herati patterns. The foundation is normally of cotton (only in antique pieces, made of wool), and two shots of weft threads compacted tightly over each row of knots. The typical pattern of Sanandaj rugs is the repeated Herati Mahi, with or without a medallion, in rich red, blue, ivory, and brown colors. Floral patterns are mostly seen in Sanandaj rugs of recent production. They come in all different sizes with hall runners being popular in the production of this region. However, anything larger than 8 by 10 feet would be considered uncommon in Sanandaj rugs. These rugs are one of the most sought after Persian rugs in the international markets because of their durability and attractive patterns. Some antique pieces of Senneh rugs can be very valuable. They go well with all types of décor, with an average knot density between 144 and up to about 250 KPSI.
