Shiraz is the capital city of Fars province; not only a major producer of a variety of Persian rugs, but also a major tourist attraction, and a center of art and culture. Of many tribes scattered around Shiraz, the Qashqai are the largest. The pattern in these rugs is geometric with one or several medallions, often forming an allover design. Many rugs woven in the Fars province show great influence of the pattern used in Shiraz rugs. Most rugs woven in this region have hand-spun, good quality wool, and use of natural dyes is very common. Shiraz rugs are very decorative and go well with western taste. Most Gabbeh rugs are woven in this area. Pieces larger than 6 by 9 feet are usually not woven in Shiraz, nor in any of its neighboring cities and villages. Strong colors of red, blue, and brown are typical of these rugs. For the foundation, the warp is wool in most cases, and the weft is either wool or cotton. There are a few different qualities of Shiraz rugs in the market, but the majority of them have a knot count of 110-180 KPSI.
