Zanjan
Zanjan is the capital of the northwestern province of Zanjan, and produces very beautiful examples of Persian tribal rugs. In one type of Zanjan rugs, geometric patterns, sharp and lively colors of red and dark blue, and a weave resembling Hamadan rugs are used. The wool is hand-spun, and usually is naturally dyed. The foundation is cotton with one single shot of weft passing over each row of knots. In another type, geometric patterns, usually in the group of Mahi Herati are used with softer color combinations, and a weave similar to Bijar rugs. This group (called Goltogh) is more tightly woven, has a cotton foundation with two shots of weft inserted over each row of knots, packed tightly. These are very durable, highly demanded, and very decorative Persian rugs. There are traces of great influence of western tastes in these rugs. They come in a variety of sizes, but do not usually exceed 6 by 9 feet. Zanjan rugs have always been exported to different parts of the world. The average knot density for the two groups of Zanjan rugs is between 100 and 250 KPSI.
